Method of Levels (MOL)
A self-guided technique to surface internal goal conflicts. You notice a stuck point, describe it, and shift attention to the higher-level goal it threatens.
How to Use
- Describe the problem as you experience it right now.
- Ask: “What would this prevent me from having or being?”
- Notice shifts (aha moments) and capture new options.
- Turn an insight into a small next action for Today’s Actions.
Scientific Rationale
- Based on Perceptual Control Theory: problems arise when two goals conflict; resolving at the higher level restores control.
- Pairs well with journaling and implementation intentions.
